Every Halloween costume does the same job: it hides what is underneath. On October 31, that is harmless fun. In IT, it is how real problems stay hidden.
Plenty of business data risks look perfectly normal from the outside. The backup job shows green. The server is humming along. The data backup plan is “done.” Then something fails, and the costume comes off.
So this Halloween, let’s play unmasking. Here are four risks dressed up as safe, why each one matters, and a quick way to check yours.
The Ghost: A Backup Nobody Has Ever Tested
A green “success” status. The job ran, so the data must be there.
A backup you have never restored from is a belief, not a plan. Files can be corrupt, a backup chain can be incomplete, or a restore can fail the one time you truly need it. Like a ghost, it seems present until you try to touch it.
Verify, do not assume. BDRShield runs automated backup verification, including checksum checks and recoverability tests that boot VMs and confirm disks can be mounted. Then put a scheduled test restore on the calendar and treat it like any other maintenance window.
When did you last restore a full VM or a single file from backup, and how long did it take? If nobody remembers, that is your answer.
The Zombie: The Server That Fell Off the Schedule
An old file server, a migrated VM, a laptop on a remote desk. It is still running, and people still depend on it.
Environments change faster than backup policies. A workload gets added or moved, and nobody updates the job list. SaaS data is a classic zombie too. Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace feel like someone else’s job, so they quietly go unprotected. Data loss prevention starts with knowing exactly what you are protecting.
Put every workload in one place. BDRShield protects VMware, Hyper-V, Proxmox and KVM environments, Windows, Linux and Mac endpoints, NAS, AWS and Azure workloads, SQL Server, MySQL and PostgreSQL databases, plus Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace, all from one centralized console.
Ask each team lead which system they would miss first on Monday morning. Then confirm it appears in a backup job.
The Trickster: Ransomware in a Friendly Costume
An invoice attachment, a familiar login page, a message from “IT support.”
Ransomware does not only lock production files. Modern attacks often try to reach backups too, so a backup on the same network with the same credentials can be encrypted along with everything else.
Ransomware protection works best when backups are isolated and checkable. BDRShield supports immutable storage, air-gapped backups, and a hardened Linux repository with single-use credentials. It also offers anomaly detection and can scan backup data and restore it in an isolated environment before it goes back into production. A clean restore point matters as much as having a copy.
Can the account that runs your production servers also delete your backups? If yes, the costume is working.
The Haunted House: All Your Copies Under One Roof
“We have backups!” Said while those backups sit on the same NAS, in the same building, on the same network as production.
Fire, flood, a power event, theft, or one compromised admin account can take production and its backup together. That is not a backup gap. It is a disaster recovery gap.
Follow the 3-2-1 rule: three copies, on two types of media, with one offsite. BDRShield supports offsite copies, tape archival, and hybrid storage, so your copies are never all in one place. For VMware environments, replication and failover and failback options help you get back to work faster.
If your office were unreachable tomorrow, where would your newest backup be?
Halloween-Proof Your Data Backup: A 6-Step Checklist
Run through this before the next trick shows up:
- List every workload (servers, VMs, endpoints, SaaS, databases) and match each one to a backup job
- Follow 3-2-1, with at least one copy offsite
- Make at least one copy immutable or air-gapped
- Turn on automated backup verification and run a real test restore
- Set recovery time and recovery point targets for each critical workload, then confirm your restores actually meet them
- Document who restores what, and keep admin credentials somewhere an attacker cannot reach
Unmask It Before It Costs You
Halloween only lasts one night, but the risks hiding in your environment keep going. The good news is that every one of these costumes comes off with a little planning and the right tools.
