On-premise or Offsite Backup? Choice is yours

Surviving a disaster and maintaining business continuity are the bane of every IT admin’s existence. When it comes to backups, you can go one of two ways.

  • On-premise Backup.
  • Offsite Backup.

My choice and recommendation is always On-premise backup over offsite and here is why:

  • An offsite backup consumes greater bandwidth and takes up more time to complete a job than On-premise backups.
  • In case of a network issue, an offsite backup job will get affected and lead to delays whereas On-premise backups don’t have to deal with such problems.
  • Quick restores are possible in On-premise backups which ensures a greater degree of business continuity.
  • Chances of security compromises are high on offsite backups unless a military grade security algorithm is used for data transfer.
