In this article, we will talk about how Vembu BDR performs backups of Microsoft SQL servers. Microsoft SQL servers allow for storage and retrieval of the data from databases. Most database servers are configured to retain data on a server and access it remotely. SQL servers use transaction logs to read and write the data.

Vembu BDR uses a proprietary plugin to take backups of Microsoft SQL servers. The Vembu SQL plugin feature makes it easy to add SQL servers to Vembu BDR. An initial installation of Vembu BDR is needed on the machine running the SQL server. After the installation, a bridge connection is made between Vembu BDR and the SQL server database(s).

The plugin uses the VDI API to take backups from the SQL server machine. Vembu BDR will first backup the databases to a temporary location in the local machine before uploading them to a the backup server. Vembu BDR allows for full, differential backup and transaction logs to be taken. Full Backup allows an entire database to be backed up; Differential backup is only for modified extensions from the previous full backup. In transaction logs, active portions can be backed up and inactive portions can be truncated.

The Vembu BDR SQL server plugin deploys and manages the database in both on-premise and cloud locations, which makes it easier for IT admins to integrate with their existing features.
