For Managed Service Providers (MSPs)

Multi-tenant vCenter backup management, monthly billing, white-label branding — protect every client’s VMware environment profitably.

Your Clients’ vCenter Environments Are One Incident Away from Hours of Unplanned Downtime

Every MSP managing vSphere clients is one hardware failure, one failed VCSA upgrade, or one ransomware event away from a recovery crisis. Most incumbent tools charge per-VM enterprise pricing that destroys service margins before you add storage and support costs.

BDRShield gives MSPs purpose-built, multi-tenant VMware vCenter backup with the billing flexibility and margin structure to protect every client’s environment profitably — including vCenter Server, guest VMs, and backup snapshot management across all client sites from a single console.

Veeam Costs ~$250/VM/Year

Protecting 750 client VMs with Veeam costs ~$187,500/yr. BDRShield costs $20,250 — an 89% reduction before any volume discount is applied.

Ransomware Specifically Targets ESXi

Attackers encrypt entire ESXi datastores to take down all VMs at once. Without immutable, air-gapped backup copies, there is no clean recovery point to restore from.

!
Edition Complexity Drives Cost Creep

Veeam Standard, Advanced, Premium — the features you actually need are always in a higher tier. BDRShield is one edition with all features included, at one price.

Multi-Tenant Console

All client vCenter environments visible and manageable from one cloud or on-premise portal. Role-based access, white-label branding, and PSA/RMM integration included.

Monthly Per-VM Billing

Scale billing up or down each month as clients add or remove VMs. No annual commitments, no minimum VM thresholds, no surprise reconciliation invoices at renewal.

Centralized Backup Reporting

Scheduled backup status reports across all client vCenter environments. Proactively identify failed jobs, missed schedules, and storage threshold alerts before clients notice.

Immutable Backup Storage

Retention lock on hardened Linux repositories and object lock on S3 and Azure Blob. Client backup copies cannot be modified or deleted — even if the production vCenter is compromised.

The Problem

Most VMware Environments Treat vCenter as an Afterthought in Backup Planning

Losing your vCenter Server or VCSA means losing visibility into your entire vSphere infrastructure. Guest VMs, snapshots, and backup policies all depend on it.

When vCenter Goes Down, Your Entire vSphere Environment Loses Its Control Plane

Your vCenter Server or VCSA is the management layer for every ESXi host, every guest VM, and every vSphere policy in your environment. A failed vCenter upgrade, a corrupt VCSA appliance, a misconfigured change, or a ransomware event targeting your management infrastructure can leave you unable to manage, monitor, or recover any workload in your datacenter — even if the underlying ESXi hosts are still running.

VMware snapshots are not a substitute. They accumulate silently, degrade VM performance, and cannot survive a storage failure or a coordinated ransomware attack. You need true, independent, verified backup of your vCenter Server and all guest VMs — stored outside the production vSphere infrastructure.

Protect Your vCenter Environment Now

VMware Snapshots Are Not Backup

Snapshots grow silently, consume datastore space, and can corrupt VM data if left too long. They share the same storage as your production VMs, offer no offsite protection, and provide zero defense against ransomware. BDRShield provides true independent backup with verified recovery, completely separated from your vSphere storage infrastructure.

01

vCenter Server Corruption

A failed update, a bad configuration change, or a storage fault can corrupt your vCenter Server database or VCSA appliance. Without a recent backup of vCenter itself, rebuilding management infrastructure can take days.

02

Ransomware Targeting ESXi Hosts

Modern ransomware variants specifically target VMware ESXi datastores, encrypting every VM simultaneously. Without immutable, air-gapped backup copies, there is no clean restore point to recover from.

03

Guest VM Deletion or Corruption

A scripting error, an accidental deletion, or VM file corruption can remove a critical workload in seconds. BDRShield point-in-time restore brings the exact VM state back without rebuilding from scratch.

04

Compliance and Audit Requirements

HIPAA, SOC 2, and ISO 27001 require documented, independent backup with verified restore capability. vSphere snapshots alone do not satisfy auditors. BDRShield provides compliance-ready retention policies and backup verification reports.

Agentless vCenter Backup and Restore, Built for How vSphere Actually Works

BDRShield connects directly to your VMware vCenter Server via the vSphere API — no agents, no proxies inside guest VMs. It backs up your entire vSphere-managed environment including ESXi hosts, guest VMs, and application data, and stores verified, restorable copies on local storage, hardened repositories, or cloud destinations.

One Agent-Free Connection to vCenter Protects Your Entire vSphere Infrastructure

Point BDRShield at your vCenter Server or directly at standalone ESXi hosts. The platform uses Changed Block Tracking (CBT) to perform incremental-forever backups with minimal impact on production workloads. Backup jobs run on a configurable schedule, and every backup is automatically verified for recoverability before the job completes.

When you need to restore, BDRShield gives you precise options: instant VM boot directly from backup storage, full VM restore to the same or alternate ESXi host, granular file-level recovery from inside a VM, or application-item recovery for SQL Server, Exchange, and Active Directory.

See It in Action

vCenter-Managed and Standalone ESXi

Back up any VM managed through VMware vCenter Server or connected directly to a standalone ESXi host — both are fully supported without separate licensing.

CBT-Powered Incremental Backup

Changed Block Tracking ensures only modified disk blocks are transferred after the initial full backup. Backup windows stay short, storage consumption stays manageable.

Automated Backup Verification

Every backup is automatically verified for bootability and consistency. You know before an incident whether your restore points are actually recoverable.

Audience

For IT Administrators, System Administrators & Virtualization Engineers

Protect your vCenter-managed vSphere environment from hardware failure, ransomware, and VM corruption — with tested, instant recovery built in.

100% Agentless Backup via vSphere API

Connects to vCenter Server or standalone ESXi using the vSphere API. No agents inside Windows or Linux guest VMs. Works with vCenter-managed clusters and standalone hosts.

Instant VM Boot Recovery

Boot any backed-up VM directly from backup storage in under a minute. No full restore required. Run the VM live while the full restore completes in the background.

Backup Snapshot Management

BDRShield creates application-consistent VMware snapshots for backup, then removes them immediately after. No snapshot accumulation, no datastore bloat, no performance degradation over time.

Immutable, Ransomware-Proof Copies

Retention lock on hardened Linux repositories and object lock on S3 or Azure Blob. Backup data cannot be modified or deleted even if the ESXi host or vCenter is compromised.

Granular File-Level Recovery

Recover individual files and folders from inside any backed-up Windows or Linux guest VM — without restoring the entire VM first. Useful for accidental deletions and partial file corruption.

Application-Item Recovery

Restore individual SQL Server databases, Exchange mailboxes, and Active Directory objects from inside a VM backup — without mounting the full VM or engaging the database team.

Compliance-Ready Retention

Configurable retention policies with defined RPO and RTO targets. Backup verification reports and audit logs support HIPAA, SOC 2, ISO 27001, and GDPR documentation requirements.

VM Replication for DR Readiness

Replicate vSphere VMs to a secondary ESXi host or remote vCenter site. Fail over in minutes with RPO as low as 15 minutes, and fail back cleanly once the primary site is recovered.

Fast Recovery Times for vCenter-Managed Workloads. Tested and Verified.

When an incident happens, the speed of your first recovery action determines how much production time you lose. BDRShield is built around minimizing RTO — from instant VM boot directly from backup storage, to full VM restore and application-level item recovery for the workloads inside your vSphere environment.

See Recovery Options

Instant VM Boot: Under 1 Minute RTO

Boot any backed-up VM on the same or alternate ESXi host directly from backup storage. The VM is live and accessible while a full restore runs in the background.

🔄
VM Replication: RPO as Low as 15 Minutes

Continuously replicate critical vSphere VMs to a secondary site. If the primary vCenter or ESXi host fails, replicated VMs can be powered on within minutes.

Automated Backup Verification

Every backup is automatically tested for bootability and data consistency after each job. You receive confirmation that the restore point is valid — before you ever need it.

vCenter Backup and Restore – FAQ

BDRShield backs up all VMs managed by your vCenter Server, including the vCenter Server Appliance (VCSA) itself, which runs as a VM on your ESXi infrastructure. This means you can restore the entire vCenter management layer from backup if it becomes corrupted or unavailable, not just the workload VMs it manages. For environments running vCenter on Windows (vCSA on Windows Server), BDRShield can protect that VM in the same way as any other guest.
A VMware snapshot captures the state of a VM’s disk at a specific point in time, but it remains on the same datastore as the VM. It offers no protection against storage failure, ransomware, or accidental deletion of the datastore itself. A proper vCenter backup via BDRShield copies the full VM data to a separate, independent storage destination, off the production vSphere infrastructure. This separation is what makes recovery possible when the primary environment is unavailable. BDRShield uses CBT-powered snapshot-based backup as a read mechanism during the backup job, then immediately removes the temporary snapshot. No snapshots accumulate in your environment.
Yes. BDRShield connects to your vCenter Server and discovers all ESXi hosts, clusters, resource pools, and VMs under that vCenter. You can configure backup jobs at the vCenter level, the cluster level, or for individual VMs. Any VM managed by that vCenter — regardless of which ESXi host it currently runs on — can be backed up and protected.
The VMware vCenter Server Appliance (VCSA) is a Linux-based virtual appliance that runs on an ESXi host. BDRShield backs up the VCSA VM just like any other guest VM in your vSphere environment, using agentless image-level backup via the vSphere API. The VCSA backup captures the full appliance state, including the vCenter database and configuration, so you can restore a fully functional vCenter management layer from backup if needed.
Yes. BDRShield supports granular file-level recovery from any backed-up Windows or Linux guest VM. You can browse the VM’s file system from within the BDRShield console and restore individual files or folders without restoring the full VM. For Windows guests, BDRShield also supports application-item recovery for SQL Server databases, Exchange mailboxes, and Active Directory objects.
BDRShield supports VMware ESXi versions 5.x through 8.x, including all intermediate versions. Both free ESXi hypervisors and licensed ESXi hosts managed by vCenter Server are supported. If your environment includes ESXi hosts at mixed version levels, BDRShield handles them all from a single backup console without requiring separate agents or configurations per host version.
Yes. BDRShield supports cross-host and cross-datacenter restore. You can restore any backed-up VM to a different ESXi host, a different datastore, or even a different vCenter-managed environment. This is useful for disaster recovery scenarios where the original ESXi host or vCenter Server is unavailable. The instant VM boot option is also available on any available ESXi host, not just the source host.
Yes. The file-level recovery feature in BDRShield lets you access the internal file system of any backed-up VM and recover individual files without mounting the full VM image externally or engaging a separate recovery tool. This makes it useful both for emergency recovery of accidentally deleted files and for routine operational needs like restoring a specific database file or log from a known-good backup point.
BDRShield can connect directly to standalone ESXi hosts in addition to vCenter Server. If your vCenter appliance becomes temporarily unavailable, backup jobs targeting directly-connected standalone ESXi hosts can still run. For jobs configured at the vCenter level, they will pause until vCenter is accessible again. This is one reason why including the VCSA VM itself as a protected asset is recommended — it ensures vCenter can be restored quickly and backup management operations can resume.
Yes. BDRShield backs up both Windows and Linux guest VMs running on VMware ESXi using an agentless approach through the vSphere API. No agents are installed inside the guest OS. For application-consistent backups of Windows VMs, BDRShield uses the Microsoft VSS framework. For Linux VMs, it uses pre and post backup scripts for application quiescing where needed.
